Small grains improve with warmer weatherMontana Montana received below normal precipitation for the week ending June 22, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Montana Field Office, June 23. Superior had the most moisture at 0.76 of an inch during the week. Highs were mostly in the 80s, and lows were mostly in the 30s and 40s. Superior and Missoula shared the high temperature of 94 degrees. Superior also had the low temperature of 31 degrees. Topsoil moisture adequate and surplus, at 78 percent, is below last week's 86 percent, last year's 82 percent, and the five-year average of 79 percent. Subsoil moisture adequate and surplus, at 59 percent, is below last week's 64 percent, last year's 78 percent, and the five-year average of 60 percent. The number of days suitable for field work was 6.1 days. The weather outlook for June 30 through July 6 is for above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation both east and west of the continental divide. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the mid 70s to the mid 80s and lows ranging from 40 degrees to the upper 50s. The state welcomed warm temperatures last week after receiving moisture at the beginning of the month. All of the small grain conditions have improved from the previous week; however, more moisture will be needed for crops and hay to withstand the heat. Most of the pulse crops and oilseeds are developing slower than last year. Hay cutting is behind last year and the five-year average. Almost all livestock have been moved to summer pastures. Fifty-six percent of range and pasture feed condition is good and excellent, compared to 52 percent last week, 73 percent last year, and a five-year average of 55 percent. 6/30/08 Date: 6/25/08
