Texas Alliance for Water Conservation finalizes program for 2008 farmer field day

Texas

Texas Alliance for Water Conservation announces its 2008 field day to be held at the Floyd County Unity Center in Muncy, Texas, on July 31. The program will highlight current and future production and water management project activities and what they have learned from past production practices and research efforts.

"This field day is a rare opportunity to see the latest field research, learn of new energy and water saving technologies and hear first hand from commodity groups and political leaders the future directions for agriculture and water management," said Rick Kellison, project director for TAWC.

The project uses on-farm demonstrations of cropping and livestock systems to compare the production practices, technologies, and systems that can maintain individual farm profitability while improving water use efficiency with a goal of extending the life of the Ogallala Aquifer while maintaining the viability of local farms and communities.

The program will include commodity leader panel discussion on the new farm bill and a luncheon keynote address by Texas Senator Robert Duncan. Emerging technology presentations will be given on the new SmartCrop irrigation management technology and Exactrix anhydrous delivery systems.

Along with the speakers and presentations, several project field sites will be visited including perennial grasses variety trial plots, forage sorghum and perennial grass seed production under pivot irrigation, cotton production comparison of flood and drip irrigation systems, and corn production with SmartCrop Sensors and Exactrix demonstration. Lunch will be served after the field trips.

TAWC is a unique partnership of Floyd and Hale county producers, data collection technologies, and collaborating partners that includes industries, universities, and government agencies. The TAWC project was made possible through a grant from the Texas Water Development Board. For more information please visit the official website of the project: http://depts.ttu.edu/tawc.
