New aquatic herbicide receives full label

BASF Professional Vegetation Management (ProVM) has announced that Clearcast herbicide has received full label approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Clearcast, a new product from BASF ProVM, is designed for vegetation management professionals who require selective aquatic and shoreline weed control with minimal irrigation limitations. Clearcast controls target weeds, leaving desirables unaffected, making it ideal for aquatic areas that support wildlife habitat, fishing and other recreational activities.

In 2006 and 2007, Clearcast was applied for vegetation management through an Experimental Use Permit (EUP) in 17 states. Applications showed good control of floating, emerged and shoreline species such as common salvinia, water hyacinth, watershield, water lily, cattail, phragmites and giant reed. Additionally, targeted applications can control invasive exotics such as Chinese tallowtree without harming desirable hardwood vegetation.

According to the EPA, Clearcast has a very favorable environmental profile, and is classified as practically nontoxic to birds, fish, algae and aquatic invertebrates. Clearcast has been granted a tolerance exemption by the EPA, which means there are no food residue limits for Clearcast in fish, shellfish, crustaceans or irrigated crops, when used as labeled.

Clearcast controls a broad spectrum of floating, emergent and shoreline weeds, including: Alligatorweed; Cattail; Chinese Tallowtree; Common Salvinia; Frogbit; Giant Reed Lotus; Parrotfeather; Pennywort; Phragmites; Pickerelweed; Primrose Sagittaria; Smartweed; Spatterdock; Water Four-Leaf Clover; Water Hyacinth; Water Lily; and Watershield.

Clearcast may be applied in a variety of ways, including directly to water for the control of submerged aquatic plant species; as a foliar application specifically for emergent and floating species; and via ground or aerial equipment including both fixed-wing and helicopter. When applying a foliar application by boat, the boat trail must be adequately sprayed after passing through. Clearcast is also a great tank-mix partner with many other aquatic herbicides. There are minimal irrigation restrictions and no restrictions on swimming, fishing or drinking water.
