KGLC hosting two range schools in AugustKansas The Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition, Inc., is hosting two range schools in August--one for eastern Kansas at White Memorial Camp in Morris County and one for western Kansas at Camp Aldrich in Barton County, said Tim Christian, KGLC coordinator. Principles of Rangeland Management, Grass and Animal Ecology in Kansas is the theme with a major emphasis on "firing up" grassland management using prescribed burning as a focal point. The eastern school is set for Aug. 12 to 14 and the western school for Aug. 19 to 21. These schools are directed at landowners, operators, outdoor enthusiasts, hired hands, agency and natural resource organization staffs, and others interested in learning rangeland ecology, wildlife, and livestock management, said Christian. The principles focus on understanding the basic ecology of Kansas rangelands and the interconnection between a healthy landscape and a healthy, profitable livestock or wildlife enterprise. With a growing interest by ranchers and others in prescribed fire and patch burning as a grassland management tool, we hope to provide a solid foundation for attendees to take with them and incorporate into their operations. Topically, attendees should find these schools most interesting as much of the study is hands-on in the field and they will learn from their counterparts, other ranchers. Along with ranchers, instructors include USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Kansas State University range and grazing lands specialists, and KGLC staff. Co-sponsoring entities for the schools at this time include NRCS, KSU Extension, and the Kansas State Conservation Commission. The registration includes two nights lodging, meals, and materials for $250, and if a second or third person from the same outfit attends their fee is reduced to $200. Deadline for registration the eastern school is August 1 and the western school is August 8. Space is limited to 30 participants in each school. Scholarships are available to virtually anyone interested in attending reducing the fee to $100 per person (and $50 for multiple attendees), said Christian. All an interested person needs to do is go to the KGLC website www.kglc.org and fill out a very simple scholarship form and get it to us by July 18. We have much more detailed information about the schools and highlights from last year's western school on the website. KGLC was organized in 1991 and as a non-profit its vision is regenerating Kansas Grazing Lands. The partnership meets its mission to regenerate Kansas grazing land resources through cooperative management, economics, ecology, production, education, and technical assistance programs through a variety of voluntary methods to reach landowners, ranchers, and other making decisions on grazing lands.
