KCA: Soil nutrition topic at local feed yardKansas Ottawa County Feeders hosted Genesis Soil Rite Calcium creator Steve Westin for a seminar on managing calcium to increase soil nutrition. Westin, who has been developing his calcium formula for 30 years, spoke to a packed house at the yard. Participants included local farmers and ranchers, feeders, producers from Oklahoma and Missouri, and organizations including the Kansas Cattlemen's Association. Explaining that trace minerals in the soil can be influenced through production, Westin stressed that calcium is the most influential trace mineral and often the most deficient. The amount of calcium in the soil has a direct correlation to the plants' sugar and energy content. Having a sufficient amount of aerobic top soil being key to efficient growth, calcium is a driving force in creating that. Territory consultants Harold Stephens and Joe Knopp explained how GSR calcium is different than other calcium formulas in the market. According to GSR, other calcium formulas often contain carbonate components, magnesium, or sulfur, which can result in metabolic problems. When other components are attached to calcium, it won't allow clays to flocculate, plant stems remain hollow, and still the soil can remain calcium deficient. GSR calcium is highly specialized. It is clean calcium that allows all of its electrical energy to aid in accepting phosphorous, building sugars in the plant and increasing its nutritional value. Ottawa County Feeders got involved with GSR calcium approximately four years ago when yard co-owner and manager Perry Owens was discussing feed yard environmental issues with Knopp, who by the way is a native Kansan. The two men began talking about the fields. Owens knew he had high phosphorus levels at the time, and environmental regulators indicated that the ground would not be usable for five years. "This calcium helped us utilize the phosphorus, and it only took two years versus the expected five. Calcium is the basis for everything. We are now using it on two fields where we de-water and another field where we use both calcium and phosphorus. We have been able to maintain the phosphorus levels. And, we have improved the ground on the field that to my knowledge has never been de-watered. We still have a long way to go, but we have made tremendous progress," remarked Owens. During the seminar, Westin led the participants on a field trip to demonstrate the outcomes of the fields where there calcium had been applied and compared them to those fields with no GSR calcium. As Owens said, "The proof is in the puddin." As the creator, Westin has utilized a common sense approach to using his calcium and has taken it to a principle level. He is pleased to see people like Knopp and Owens implementing techniques and hopes the next generation of producers will continue to increase the nutritional value of soil with rejuvenation production. As GSR demonstrates its techniques and accentuates its successes with its calcium, they aim to provide producers with the ability to get rid of some of the inefficient chemicals used in production agriculture and put back the natural minerals that the soil needs to be nutritional, effective, and efficient to provide better quality food for cattle and consumers. 6/23/08 Date: 6/19/08 Advertisement
