Cooler weather with precipitationWyoming During the week ending June 15, crop progress was behind normal, while pasture and range conditions remain steady, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, June 16. Last week's temperatures across Wyoming remained cool and below normal. High temperatures ranged from the low 90s to the low 60s. Low temperatures were mostly in the low 20s to the low 40s. The majority of the reporting stations received below normal precipitation. Accumulative precipitation remains behind normal levels in 11 of the 33 reporting stations. Topsoil moisture levels remained strong with 91 percent adequate or better. An average of 5.8 days were suitable for fieldwork last week. Continued cool weather has slowed crop progress; however, crop conditions for small grains remained steady. Only 61 percent of the winter wheat was headed, 18 points behind the average pace. Only 16 percent of the spring wheat was booted, 23 points behind the average pace. Spring wheat has merely entered the headed stage. Seven percent of the barley was headed, 21 points behind the 5-year average. Oats were at 22 percent in the boot stage, 9 points behind the 5-year average. Corn had emerged at 81 percent, 13 points below average, with an average height of 5 inches. Dry beans remained well below average at 31 percent emerged. Ninety-seven percent of the sugarbeets had emerged, current with last year and the 5-year average. Alfalfa hay was at 7 percent in the first cutting stage, 17 points below average. Platte County is planting corn and beans to replace sugarbeets which were lost due to severe hail and flooding the previous week. Range and pasture conditions remained the same as last week at 61 percent good. Range flock lambing was 91 percent complete, 7 points behind the average pace. Lamb losses were mostly light to normal across the state. Shearing range flock was 96 percent complete, 4 points behind the 5-year average. 6/23/08 Date: 6/18/08 Advertisement
