Colorado added to FDA's safe tomato list

Colorado

Colorado has been added to the Food and Drug Administration's list of states not associated with the latest food safety alert for certain types of red tomatoes due to a salmonella outbreak.

"Very few Colorado tomatoes are on the market right now but those tomatoes harvested in our state have been cleared of any connection with the salmonella outbreak" said Commissioner of Agriculture, John Stulp. "If you're shopping for tomatoes, try to buy locally grown tomatoes or make sure they come from an FDA list of approved states."

The FDA recommends that retailers, restaurants, and other food service operators not offer raw red Roma, raw red plum, and raw red round tomatoes unless they are from sources that have not been associated with the outbreak. If unsure of where tomatoes are grown or harvested, consumers are encouraged to contact the store where the tomato purchase was made.

The following types of tomatoes are NOT likely to be the source of this outbreak.

--cherry tomatoes;

--grape tomatoes;

--tomatoes sold with the vine still attached;

--tomatoes grown at home;

For more on the salmonellosis outbreak, including a complete list of states on the Safe Food List, visit www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/tomatoes.html#retailers.

"Colorado's main tomato crop won't hit the shelves for another month and I encourage consumers to purchase Colorado's great produce that will be available," continued Stulp.
