Avoiding bats, rabies seminar set for July 8 in Brazoria

Texas

A free day-long seminar--"Living Among Bats and Avoiding Rabies Risks"--is scheduled for July 8 in Brazoria, said a Texas AgriLife Extension Service specialist.

The seminar will be held at the Steve Edwards Support Services building, 20044 Hwy 36, Brazoria, about 55 miles south of Houston. It will begin at 8 a.m., and end at 3:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

"The Houston area has a real big problem with bats in buildings, that is why I worked so hard to get this seminar there," said Janet Hurley, a seminar coordinator and AgriLife Extension program specialist for school integrated pest management.

Pre-registration is required and closes June 30, she said.

To register, contact Brittany Singletary at the Texas Department of State Health Services Region 6-5 South Zoonosis Control office in Houston at 713-767-3300 or Brittany.singletary@dshs.state.tx.us . Provide a name, agency, telephone number and e-mail address.

The program will cover bat species and their habits, rabies and laws and regulations governing colony removal.

The seminar is open to animal control officers, law enforcement officials, veterinary and human medical professionals, animal shelter workers, wildlife rehabilitators, public health and school nurses, school district personnel and others interested in preventing rabies in southeast Texas, Hurley said.

Continuing education credits are available to animal control and law enforcement officers.

Participating organizations include the Texas Parks Wildlife Department, Bat Conservation International, Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Regions 6 and 5 and AgriLife Extension.
