Wheat estimated 80 percent headedKansas Kansas weather during the week ending May 25 was warm and sunny with heavy precipitation through the weekend, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, May 28. Producers averaged 4.6 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated at 5 percent very short, 12 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 24 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 5 percent very short, 12 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. Primary farm activity involved cutting alfalfa hay, herbicide spraying on corn, and planting of corn, soybeans, sorghum, sunflowers, and cotton. Wheat is estimated at 80 percent headed, compared to 94 percent last year and 97 percent for the 5-year average. Wheat condition is rated 6 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Insect infestation of the wheat crop is rated at 80 percent none, 17 percent light, and 3 percent moderate. Disease infestation is rated at 53 percent none, 32 percent light, 13 percent moderate, and 2 percent severe. Reports across the state indicate that leaf rust, mildew, leaf blotch, and stripe rust are affecting the wheat plants. Sixty-six percent is emerged, compared to 77 percent in 2007, and 81 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 3 percent excellent. Twenty-one percent of the sorghum has been planted, compared to 20 percent last year and 29 percent for the 5-year average. Ten percent has emerged, compared to 5 percent in 2007, and 11 percent for the 5-year average. Forty-seven percent of the soybeans have been planted, compared to 39 percent last year and 49 percent for the 5-year average. Soybeans are 18 percent emerged, compared to 15 percent in 2007 and 21 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-five percent of cotton has been planted, compared to 17 percent for the previous year and 30 percent for the 5-year average. Four percent of the sunflowers have been planted, the same as the previous year but behind the 5-year average of 16 percent.
