Springfield cattle sales reportThe Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo., reported receipts of 2,480 head May 21, compared to 1,863 last week, and 2,101 a year ago, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, feeder steers sold $4 to $6 higher, with several instances of $7 to $9 higher mostly on wean/vac offerings. Feeder heifers sold $2 to 4 higher. Holstein steers under 500 pounds sold $5 to $7 higher, those over 500 pounds steady to $2 higher. The biweekly wean/vac sale was held in conjunction with this week's normal sale and those offerings did draw slightly more interest as is common in today's market place. More typical spring weather has been much welcomed to the area this week, allowing fields to began to dry out and giving some the opportunity to cut hay or plant crops. The much warmer weather was also very favorable to pasture growth. In a normal year it would be pretty late for farmers to be gathering grass cattle but this has been far from a normal year given the area is near a foot over average rain fall and temperatures have generally been below average. The more favorable conditions brought out a handful of farmers which were still on the fence as they have determined there is still hope of seeing some decent grass in areas that haven't already been over grazed. Supply was heavy possibly foreshadowing an upcoming week of light receipts due to the holiday. Demand was good. The feeder offering was made up of 34% steers, 37% heifers, 18% feeder bulls, and 11% Holstein steers. Near 40% of the offering weighed more than 600 pounds.
