Sioux Falls sheep sales

The Sioux Falls Sheep Sale, Sioux Falls, S.D., reported receipts of 625 head of sheep and 46 head of goats May 20, compared to 784 sheep and 1 goat last week and 764 sheep and 124 goats last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls.

Compared to last week, there were not enough comparable sales of slaughter lambs for an accurate market trend, however a higher undertone was noted. Slaughter ewes were too few to test and feeder lambs sold mostly $1 to $3 higher. Demand and buyer attendance was good to very good. These slaughter lambs were all new crops and the first offering of significant numbers this season. Buyers aggressively bid on new crop feeders. Feeder lambs comprised 70 percent of the offering; 22 percent were slaughter lambs; 5 percent slaughter ewes and the balance was mostly bucks and yearlings.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled, Choice and Prime 2 and 3, 124 to 127 lbs., 103.00 to 104.00 (103.24); 48 head, 136 lbs., 101.00 to 102.00 (101.79).

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 and 4, 5 head, 185 lbs., 23.00; 16 head, 229 to 230 lbs., 19.50 to 23.00 (19.72). Utility 1 and 2, 8 head, 125 to 157 lbs., 18.50 to 22.00 (18.86).

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 and 2, 30 head, 36 lbs., 129.50; 67 head, 54 lbs., 116.00 to 120.00 (116.78); 74 head, 61 to 68 lbs., 118.00 to 119.00 (118.42); 34 head, 74 lbs., 118.00; 171 head, 94 lbs., 117.75. Medium and large frame 2, 10 head, 56 lbs., 112.00; 5 head, 62 lbs., 107.50; 11 head, 83 to 89 lbs., 100.00 to 107.50 (102.85); 7 head, 101 lbs., 93.50.
