Seasonable weather spurs crop emergenceIowa Sun and drier conditions early in the week ending May 25 allowed significant progress in corn and oat emergence, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, May 27. Soybeans also began to emerge in all districts of Iowa. There were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.3 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 26 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 1 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 30 percent surplus. Oat seeding was 97 percent complete, approximately 13 days behind last year. Oats emerged was 77 percent, behind last year's 98 percent and the five-year average of 99 percent. Soybeans are 72 percent planted and 12 percent emerged. Corn is 93 percent planted, behind last year's and the five-year average of 97 percent. Corn planting is 5 days behind the five-year average. Corn is 54 percent emerged, which is 8 days behind last year and 9 days behind the five-year average. Fertilizer application is 97 percent complete, a percentage point behind last year and two percentage points behind the five-year average. Pasture and range condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Cattle have moved to permanent pasture. 6/2/08 Date: 5/28/08
