Oklahoma Department of Wildlife selected for Cooperation AwardOklahoma The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife is one of six recipients who received the National Association of Agricultural Educators Outstanding Cooperation Award Dec. 14 at the NAAE annual conference in Las Vegas. The Department of Wildlife, represented by Department Educator Ed Cunnius of Wynnewood, Okla., operate the Shotgun Training Education Program. The STEP program provides hands on training for the interested students. Through the efforts of STEP, more than 200 of the states 357 FFA chapters have been affected. The STEP program has grown to include more than 104 educators, 11 trucks and trailers each containing at least two throwers, six shot guns, safety glasses, ear protection, ammunition and targets. Through the efforts of the Oklahoma Wildlife Department, the Oklahoma FFA has developed an event called Sporting Clays. The contest is currently set up to re-create situations that would occur during bird hunting. This past year, 3,000 FFA members participated in the contest making it the largest state contest sponsored by the Oklahoma FFA. Although Oklahoma agricultural teachers wanted to design a Sporting Clays contest, it became a reality largely due to the input of Ed Cunnius and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife. Forrest T. Jones & Company sponsors the Outstanding Cooperation Award. NAAE is the professional association for the agricultural educators. The mission of NAAE is "professionals providing agricultural education for the global community through visionary leadership, advocacy and service." The NAAE office is located on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Ky. 6/2/08 Date: 5/29/08
