Officials propose conservation programSIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP)--South Dakota officials are nearing an agreement with federal officials on a program that could pay landowners in the James River Valley to set aside up to 100,000 acres for conservation, public hunting and wildlife watching. The Game, Fish and Parks Department is working on the project and expects to have a proposal on the governor's desk within a month or so. If all goes well, the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program could be in place by next year. The program would cost about $7.5 million, with the Farm Service Agency picking up $6.5 million of the cost and the state paying $970,000. 6/2/08 Date: 5/28/08
