Veteran AgriLife Extension agent transfers homeTexas Jerry J. Kidd, has been named the Texas AgriLife Extension Service agriculture and natural resources agent for Menard County, effective June 2. The announcement was made by County Judge Richard Cordes and AgriLife Extension administrator Scott Durham. "We are very pleased with Jerry's decision to transfer home to Menard County," said Durham. "He knows the people and culture of this area and has the skills and experience needed to maintain the high level of competency this county has come to expect from their AgriLife Extension agents." Kidd has an extensive agricultural background coupled with a strong tradition of AgriLife Extension excellence that runs in his family, Durham said. His father, Billy Kidd, was a long-time agent in San Saba County. The younger Kidd's most recent agency appointment was as the AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources in McCulloch County, a position he has held since May 1996. He began his AgriLife Extension career in 1974 with a three-year stint as Hidalgo County's 4-H and youth coordinator. He was then involved with the county's agricultural program for another two years. He later transferred to Tom Green County as coordinator of the agricultural 4-H and youth program, a position he held for five years before resigning to enter the ranching business. From 1984 until 1996, he and his wife, Lisa, were managing partners of the Horseshoe Nail Ranch in Schleicher County. The ranch specialized in registered Simmental and Simbrah cattle. They also raised Angora and Spanish goats. The couple still manage family holdings in Tom Green, McCulloch and Menard counties. Kidd graduated from Texas A&M University in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in animal science. He has also completed A&M's artificial insemination and palpation school, agricultural finance school and the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership Program or "TALL" program. Throughout his career Kidd has been active in a number of organizations. These include: San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association; San Angelo Summer Spectacular Show; and American, Texas and West Texas Simmental/Simbrah associations. He is also a member of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers' Association, the Texas Farm Bureau and the National Cattleman's Association. The Kidds have two grown children. The agent fills the position vacated by Billy Kniffen who became the first AgriLife Extension rainwater harvesting specialist on April 1. 6/16/08 Date: 6/12/08 Advertisement
