Texas wheat production down 27 percent from last yearTexas The 2008 Texas winter wheat crop is forecast at 102.0 million bushels, down 27 percent from last year but up 204 percent from 2006. This estimate is up 3 percent from the May forecast. According to a June 1 survey conducted by the Texas Field Office, statewide yield is expected to average 30 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from last year and 1 bushel more than the May forecast. Harvested acreage, at 3.4 million acres, is down 11 percent from the 2007 crop but unchanged from May. Production on the Northern High Plains is forecast at 30.1 million bushels, down 63 percent from last year. Winter wheat production on the Blacklands is forecast at 22.2 million bushels, up 98 percent from last year. The Low Plains production is estimated at 33.5 million bushels, up 14 percent from last year. Production on the Southern High Plains is forecast at 3.6 million bushels, 56 percent less than the 2007 crop. United States winter wheat production for 2008 is forecast at 1.82 billion bushels, an increase of 20 percent from last year and 2 percent more than the May forecast. Yield is expected to average 45.3 bushels per acre, up 3.1 bushels from a year ago and up 1 bushel from the last forecast.
