Spring planting nearing completionMinnesota Soybeans planted neared completion after another busy week of fieldwork during the week ending June 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Minnesota Field Office, June 2. Minnesota farmers planted 65 percent of the soybean crop in the last two weeks, while corn and spring wheat crops were emerging at an expected pace despite the week's below average temperatures. The average temperature for the week was 57.6 degrees, 3.3 degrees below normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of May 30 were rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Statewide, on average, there were 5.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. As of June 1, corn planted was 98 percent complete compared to 100 percent last year and 99 percent for the 5-year average. Corn was 72 percent emerged compared to 97 percent last year and 90 percent average. Soybeans were 90 percent planted compared to 98 percent last year and 88 percent average. Soybeans were 33 percent emerged compared to 80 percent last year and 53 percent average. Spring wheat was 88 percent emerged compared to 99 percent last year and 93 percent average. Oats were 85 percent emerged compared to 99 percent last year and 95 percent average. Barley was 87 percent emerged compared to 99 percent last year and 93 percent average. Pasture conditions were rated 63 percent good to excellent. Alfalfa conditions were rated 62 percent good to excellent.
