Nebraska cattle industry leader Jim Hanna diesOMAHA, Neb. (AP)--Jim Hanna, a leader for several Nebraska cattle industry organizations, has died at the age of 47. The Sandoz Chapel of the Pines funeral home in Valentine said Hanna died this May 28 in Omaha after a brief illness. "Jim Hanna was a true leader and had a passion for standing up and fighting the issues affecting the independent cattlemen across Nebraska and the nation," said Chris Abbott, president of the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska. "We will all miss him dearly." Born James Milton Hanna in Valentine, he was the fifth generation of his family to own and operate the Pass Ranch near Brownlee in north-central Nebraska's Cherry County. After high school in Thedford, Hanna earned a bachelor's in geography at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a master's in geography at Oregon State University. Hanna was a director of the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska, a former president of the Nebraska Cattlemen, a member of R-CALF USA and a regional director for the U.S. Cattlemen's Association. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and two children; his parents and several other family members. A service is scheduled for June 4 at the Thedford High School gymnasium. 6/16/08 Date: 6/11/08
