NCTA students honored at annual awards program

Students were honored for their hard work and dedication at the 2008 Awards Program at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis May 7.

Sue Shaner, director of student services, recognized this year's NCTA Ambassadors. Shaner stated, "Our Ambassadors are key components in the success of the Admissions Office. Their dedication is critical in assisting not only our current student population, but also with helping to recruit future students to NCTA." Ambassadors graduating this year include Rachel Rosas, Amy Beiermann, Vanessa Bartek, Sara Winslow, Julia DeWilde, and Emily Jorgensen.

Dallas Talkington, rodeo coach for NCTA, shared reports of his team's success this year. "We had 19 kids as active participants on the rodeo team this year," Talkington stated. "With the pressure of competing in 10 rodeos throughout the year, this was a very dedicated group."

Rodeo team members receiving regional recognition included:

--Bareback, Travis Hart (12th in region);

--Bull riding, Heath Zellner (15th in region);

--Team roping, Cole Jess/Curt Mahoney (20th in region);

--Barrel racing, Rachel Stoner (22nd in region).

"Livestock Judging is a major time commitment, but everyone on our team really stepped up to the plate," reported Renee Minary, livestock judging coach. A special commendation was given to Spencer Reetz of Ohiowa, who has been a team member for two years and will transfer to Oklahoma Panhandle State University in the fall to pursue a degree in animal science.

TL Meyer, coach of the Horse Show Team at NCTA, reported on the many miles the team traveled for competitions this year. "We traveled from Texas to Wyoming," she shared. In addition, she praised the team for their performance as Reserve High Point Western Team at this year's Texas Tech competition. The Most Improved Western Rider for this year was Jenna Earl, and Sara Schiron was awarded the Most Improved English Rider.

Jeremy Sievers, athletic director, shared the accomplishments of the athletic teams for the 2007-2008 season. NCTA is a member of the United States Collegiate Activities Association, which is made up of 2-year and smaller 4-year schools. The Aggies' volleyball team finished 7-9 behind the leadership of Hilary Grone, who led the team in scoring, digs, hits and kills, and Sharina Buoy, who served as captain and led the team in assists. The Aggie basketball team posted a record of 4-13 with Jake Guthard earning conference All-American Honorable Mention honors.

Krystle Friesen shared her appreciation for those students she advised in Phi Theta Kappa this year. PTK members graduating this year included Lance Van Winkle, Lyndi Apolius, Sharina Buoy, Vanessa Bartek, Amy Beiermann, Bret Dearmont, and Laura Kelly.

To recognize their outstanding academic and personal achievements, Sue Shaner, Director of Student Services, honored this year's Achievement and High Achievement Recipients. "Each one of these students needs to be commended on their dedication to their academic careers, which will serve them well in the future," shared Shaner. Achievement recipients have received a 3.75 or higher GPA. This year's Achievement recipients were Lyndi Apolius, Vanessa Bartek, Amy Beiermann, Sharina Buoy, Bret Dearmont, Laura Kelly, and Max Morris.

With the Legislature recently passing a budget measure that will clear the way for NCTA to construct a new Education Center on campus, Judy Bowmaster, a NCTA faculty member, announced that NCTA faculty had raised $4,350 to be used towards kicking off the capital campaign to raise $1 million in match funds. Ann Bruntz from the University of Nebraska Foundation was on hand, along with Dean Weldon Sleight, to accept the donation by the NCTA faculty.

Individual awards were also given by academic discipline. This year's recipients by program were:

Agribusiness Management Systems:

--Outstanding 1st Year Students: Jerry Wallen and Brett Widger.

--Outstanding 2nd Year Students: Lance Van Winkle and Lyndi Apolius.

--College Conference on Cooperatives Representatives: Jake Haskell, Justin Ryan and Jerry Wallen.

Agricultural Production Systems:

Jodi Morton,Animal Science Transfer; Adam Stricker, Agronomy; Max Morris, Livestock Industry Management (Cow/Calf Emphasis); Cody Kelly, Equine Industry Management; Bret Dearmont, 100 Beef Cow Ownership Program; and Sharina Buoy, Diversified Programs.

Horticulture Systems:

--PLANET Intercollegiate Landscape Competition Awards, 7 NCTA Students participated.

Individual Placings:

--Kendra Gloss, 21st place;

--Chas Berke, 62nd place;

--David Hester, 67th place.

Veterinary Technology:

--Kayla Prince, STVMA Treasurer

--Outstanding Veterinary Assistants: Lindsey Rickstrew; Erin McCullough and Jessica Bush.

--Outstanding Veterinary Technicians: Amy Biermann and Laura Kelly.
