Gardening enthusiasts from the southern part of the country will be meeting in Oklahoma for the 2008 Southern Region Master Gardener Conference. Slated June 18 to 21, the event will take place in Oklahoma City and is open to the public.

David Hillock, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service consumer horticulturist, said this year's conference combines educational workshops, top-notch speakers and a variety of tours.

"This four-day event is sure to appeal to all Master Gardeners as well as gardening enthusiasts. We have a number of industry specialists who will be on hand to share their expertise, as well as a variety of tours that will be of interest to all participants," Hillock said.

Registration is $150 and due by May 23. Registration is $200 after May 23. Information regarding registration, workshops and tours is available at www.mastergardener2008.com/.

Keynote speakers will include Steve Dobbs and Steve Owens, two former hosts of the popular television program "Oklahoma Gardening." Dobbs currently is plant operations director at the University of Arkansas. He will present "Landscape Like a Pro." Participants will get helpful tips on design and plant selection to make their landscapes easier to maintain and enjoy.

Owens is owner of Bustani Plant Farm in Stillwater. His presentation will be "Oklahoma Native Plant Safari." He will take conference participants on a slide-show safari through the diversity of Oklahoma's native flora.

Bill Welch, horticulture faculty member at Texas A&M University, also will be on hand to share his expertise. He will present "Accessories in the Landscape."

Carl Whitcomb, former professor of ornamental horticulture at Oklahoma State University, also will be a speaker at this year's Master Gardener Conference. He has published more than 400 papers on a variety of research topics and currently holds 26 U.S. patents. One of his most notable inventions is Micromax micronutrients.

Workshop sessions will cover topics such as ornamental grasses, floral arrangement, annuals and perennials, Echinacea, how to attract wild birds to your backyard, landscape integrated pest management and fire ants, to name a few.

Tours will include a number of private gardens, the OSU Botanical Garden, Bustani Plant Farm the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Myriad Gardens, Oklahoma City National Memorial, Sunshine Nursery, Linnaeus Teaching Gardens, Philbrook Museum Gardens, Will Rogers Arboretum, Oklahoma County OSU Extension Center, Greenleaf Nursery and Lavender Hill Farms.

"We're very excited about this conference and we're confident participants will gain valuable knowledge," Hillock said. "Keep in mind that this conference is open to the public. You do not have to be a Master Gardener in order to attend."
