Live eXtension webcast June 20 focuses on managing manure on small farmsNebraska Specialists from across the United States will share information on how to properly manage manure with limited time and money during a national eXtension webcast June 20. The hour-long seminar will begin at 1:30 p.m., Central Daylight Time. The Web meeting room opens 15 minutes before the start time. Go to http://connect.extension.iastate.edu/lpelc/ to view. This focus of the webcast is to showcase resources and information tailored for small livestock producers. Much of the current information is written and developed for the larger livestock operations. Topics include challenges for small farms, environmental issues and how to develop a nutrient management plan. Speakers include: --Chris Henry, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension biological systems engineer, is the director of the Livestock Producer Environmental Assistance Project, which develops and demonstrates practical alternative technologies small livestock producers can use to minimize environmental risk. --Mark Rice, waste management extension specialist with North Carolina State University, leads the Livestock and Poultry Environmental Stewardship Curriculum Small Farms fact sheets effort. --Michael Westendorf, associate professor of animal studies at Rutgers University in New Jersey, develops research-based and practical solutions to the problems of farmers and society. --Fred Kelly, resource conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, handles nutrient management, erosion control, agronomy and pest management. Articles about small farm environmental issues are on the national eXtension Web resource at http://www.extension.org/pages/Small_Farm_Environmental_Issues_Articles. The seminar is hosted by the Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center, part of eXtension. The center advocates that individuals involved in public policy issues, animal production and delivery of technical services for confined animal systems should have on-demand access to the nation's best science-based resources. The center has a monthly newsletter. Subscriptions are available online. The webcasts are approved for one continuing education unit as part of the Certified Crop Advisers program and for members of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists.
