Farm Bureau summit to help livestock farmers weather market's storm

Iowa

Losses and tightening profit margins are causing concern in the livestock community, and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation is reaching out to help. Farm Bureau will host a New Dimensions in Livestock Risk summit on July 7 at Iowa State University's Scheman Building in Ames, Iowa.

"Livestock farmers are feeling the strain of rising feed costs and other inputs," said IFBF commodity services manager Ed Kordick. "The unpredictable nature of the livestock markets also adds tension to the situation. Farmers need information and resources to better understand the situation and to make an action plan during this negative margin time."

Pork and beef farmers have experienced significant losses as a result of higher input costs; dairy and poultry farmers are also feeling the pinch. ISU estimates farrow-to-finish pork operations lost nearly $27 per hog in April and beef farmers lost nearly $144 per yearling steer finished. While the summit cannot cap rising input costs, it can help farmers manage their risk during these unpredictable times. The meeting will bring farmers and other agriculture experts to the table to discuss the current situation, additional risks in feed costs, tools to manage market risk and strategies to manage the financial stress. Participants will listen to Market-to-Market's John Roach and experts from ISU and Farm Bureau. They will also have the opportunity to engage in three different breakout sessions throughout the day.

This event is open to all livestock farmers and is free to those who register before June 30. Registration at the door is $25. Participants who choose to register at the door will need to arrive by 8:30 a.m. Doors open at 8 a.m., and the first session will begin promptly at 9 a.m. The last session is scheduled to end at 4:30 p.m. For more information or to register, call 866-598-3693 or visit www.iowafarmbureau.com and click on the "New Dimensions in Livestock Risk" link.
