Despite warm temps, crop progess laggingColorado Most of Colorado experienced above average amounts of moisture during the week ending June 8, however, the areas around Colorado Springs and Alamosa received totals slightly below average, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, June 9. Temperatures across the state stayed warm and continue to help crops progress but most are still lagging behind the 5-year averages. Producers were allowed 5.3 days in the field for operations. Winter wheat was 82 percent headed and 15 percent turning color this week with the crop rated in mostly fair to poor condition. Spring barley was 10 percent headed and in mostly good condition. Spring wheat was 97 percent emerged, and in mostly good to fair condition. The 2008 corn crop was 88 percent emerged last week. The crop is in mostly fair condition. Summer potatoes were 90 percent planted and 55 percent emerged and the fall potato crop was 20 percent emerged. Sorghum was 37 percent planted by week's end. Sugarbeets were 80 percent up to stand with the crop in good condition. Farmers had 49 percent of the sunflowers planted. Pasture and range conditions across Colorado continue to be rated in mostly fair to poor condition.
