Bitmobile offers classes just for ag decision makersNebraska Geared especially for farmers and ranchers, E-Ag classes provide training in the world of resources available by computer, said Assistant Extension Educator Rob Eirich. The classes teach computer and decision-making skills utilizing computer software, Eirich said. Besides people involved in production agriculture, a lot of students work on the commercial side, such as truck drivers, elevator administrators and sales personnel for the chemical companies. "We try to hone in on those skills that will be most useful in the students' own operations," Eirich said. "We start with some basic skills like file management and navigating through their own computers." Next, participants learn to utilize Microsoft Excel. They learn to create simple spreadsheets to figure a budget or a break-even scenario for crops or livestock. They learn to design formulas and how to format the spreadsheet. The next step involves using the Internet to find spreadsheets that universities have made available for producers to use on-line. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln websites have a number of such spreadsheets. Some appear on the West Central Research and Extension Center website at http://www.westcentral.unl.edu. For spreadsheets designed by local ag economists in North Platte, click on "Ag Managers Toolbox." Other spreadsheets can be found on the UNL Department of Agricultural Economics Site at http://www.agecon.unl.edu. To learn more about E-Ag classes, producers can contact their local Extension offices or go to the E-Training website at http://etraining.unl.edu. Click on E-Ag for information on when and where classes are taking place. "To start a class if one is not available in your area, start by contacting your local Extension office," Eirich said. "Perhaps you can get some neighbors together to start something that will meet your particular needs." Just a click away is a world of resources that will help you make better production decisions. 6/2/08 Date: 6/13/08 Advertisement
