Annual Beaumont Field Day Set for July 10Texas Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples will be the keynote speaker July 10 at the annual field day for the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Beaumont, 1509 Aggie Drive. With the field day's theme being "Harvesting the Future," Staples will talk about the vision of the Texas Department of Agriculture and the role of agriculture in the field of bioenergy. The event begins with field tours at 8 a.m. The morning program begins at 10:45 a.m., and a free barbecue lunch will be served at noon. Afternoon field tours will begin at 1 p.m. Dr. Ted Wilson, center director, will give an overview of the research facility. Dr. Michael Salassi, Louisiana State University J. Nelson Fairbanks Endowed Professor of agricultural economics, will talk about the impact of high fuel and commodity prices. The morning tour stops will address recent developments in rice breeding, a photosynthesis study, rice physiology and fertility, rice insect and disease management, and rice quality and molecular genetics.
