Unusual happening reflects skills of 4-H wool judgers

Texas

Each team at this year's National 4-H Wool Judging Contest at Sonora yielded a high individual point scorer which, according to a contest official, is very unusual.

"Each of the four teams, three from Texas and one from Wyoming, had at least one individual in the top five," said Dr. Frank Craddock, Texas AgriLife Extension Service sheep and goat specialist at San Angelo. "This has probably happened sometime in the past but, it doesn't happen often. It's good to see the 'wealth' spread around and not just one or two teams dominating. It's also a good indication of the knowledge these young people have when it comes to judging wool."

The contest, a major highlight of the 71st annual Sonora Wool and Mohair Show, was won by the Sutton County 4-H team with a score of 1,718 points. The show and its associated contests were June 17 to 19 in Sonora.

Sutton County's senior wool judges were named top judging team in the nation during the 48th annual National 4-H Wool Judging Contest, the week's premier contest held in conjunction with the Sonora Wool and Mohair Show. The team scored 1,718 points. Winning team members were Savannah Leonard, the contest's high-point winner with 597 points, Steely Ingham, Sterling Love and Chelsey Lou Campbell. Coaches were Shawna Faris and Wheless Miller.

Second place team honors went to the Harris County 4-H club with a score of 1,664 points. Third place was taken by the Runnels County 4-H team with 1,620 points, and fourth place went to the Crook County, Wyoming team with 1,601 points.

Winning the FFA wool judging contest, another major contest of the show, with a score of 1,758 points was the James Madison High School FFA team from San Antonio. Team members included Derrick Drury and Coe Gwinn, who were the contest's high point winners with 590 points, and Kyle Wahrmund and Paulina Gorches. The team's coach was Mike Wallace. Second place team honors went to Wylie FFA with 1,655 points, and third place went to the Silver City, New Mexico team with 1,619 points.

The national 4-H and FFA wool judging contests are two highlights of the Sonora Wool and Mohair Show. The show features youth judging contests and wool and mohair fleece competitions. The event is sponsored by the Sonora Lions Club and Sonora Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Sonora Wool and Mohair Company and AgriLife Extension.
