MU to host five-state viticulture field day July 28

Missouri

A Viticulture Field Day aimed at starting and developing new vineyards will be hosted July 28 by the University of Missouri Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology.

Producers from five states (Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota) will meet at Fahrmeier Farms in Lexington, Mo., then at the Baltimore Bend Winery in Waverly, Mo. Topics will include grape varieties for Midwestern vineyards, trellis systems, vineyard canopy management and the use of growth tubes, said Andy Allen, MU Extension associate viticulturist.

"The last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of vineyards around the Midwest. In 2007, Missouri's grape and wine industry alone contributed more than an estimated $700 million in total economic value," he said.

Registration at Fahrmeir Farms starts at 8 a.m. Registration is $25 and includes lunch, materials, visits with vendors and wine tasting. Deadline for registration is July 11, after which an additional $10 fee will be charged.

The program and registration forms, along with directions to both locations and a listing of nearby hotel accommodations, are available at http://iccve.missouri.edu/.
