HCC ag teams place second at NACTA competition

The Hutchinson Community College agriculture program finished second in the team sweepstakes competition at the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Conference in Stephenville, Texas on April 20.

The HCC teams won four individual team contests, including livestock, dairy, horses and crops, and placed second in poultry. HCC also placed in agricultural knowledge (3rd), soils (6th) and agricultural computers (4th).

The HCC livestock team included: Chelsea Dickinson (Glasco); Dan Trickey (Burrton) and Ashleigh Mitchell (Clinton, Mo.). Individually Dickinson placed 2nd, with Trickey 3rd, and Mitchell 4th.

The HCC dairy team included Lyndi Jury (Sublette), Glen Toews (Burrton) and Mitchell. Jury placed 2nd, while Toews was 4th and Mitchell 5th.

The HCC horse judging team included: Mia Buettell (Hutchinson), Chelsea Dickinson, Kelley Long (Oregon) and Danny Forsyth (Abilene). Buettell was first individually, with Dickinson 3rd, Long 4th and Forsyth 9th.

The crops team included: Jared Unrau (Goessel); Craig Dinkel (Palco); Jeremy Kristek (Lincolnville) and Ryan Blew (Dodge City). Unrau was the individual champion, while Dinkel was 2nd, Kristek 3rd and Blew 5th.

Other individual placings of note include Matt Becker (Mankato) who was 3rd in the individual poultry competition.

The HCC agricultural teams are coached by HCC instructors Dale Conard, Bill Disberger, Richard Geist and Steve Sears, while Ryan Still, from the Kansas Natural Resource Conservation Service, coaches the soils team.
