Cleveland County 4-Hers prepare for trip to Washington, D. C.Oklahoma A group of Oklahoma 4-Hers will be traveling to the nation's capitol as they take part in the 2008 Citizenship Washington Focus. There are 50 4-Hers from around the state who will make the trip to Washington, D.C. for the event slated June 12 to 22. Haley and Kristi Armstrong of Norman will be among the delegates taking part in CFW. The theme for the program this year is "Better Citizens Today, Better Leaders Tomorrow," and will offer participants a number of different educational activities from which they can choose. CWF is a week-long 4-H citizenship program conducted by the National 4-H Council for youth, ages 15 to 19. The program provides opportunities for young people to broaden appreciation and practice respect for themselves and others, increase individual commitment to citizen involvement, understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities and have a lot of fun. 4-Hers will have the chance to meet with members of Congress, hear motivational speakers, attend skill-building workshops, assemblies and make new and lasting friendships. Through their participation in this event, delegates should strengthen their communication, leadership and citizenship skills; gain a better understanding of the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders; exchange ideas; and experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of Washington, D.C. The conference offers on-site workshops at some of the many historical points in Washington, D.C., including the Capitol, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, presidential and war monuments and memorials, the Smithsonian and many others. Participants will gain cultural experience by attending a dinner theatre presentation of "All Shook Up." In addition, the group will take part in the week's signature event, Nightview, a tour of our nation's most historic sites beautifully illuminated. The 4-H group will also have the opportunity for sight seeing during the bus trip to and from Washington, D.C. Some of the historical sights to be visited include Gettysburg and Philadelphia. These places are rich in American history and will provide delegates a first-hand look at what they've learned in their high school history and civics classes. Overall, the CWF trip is one of the most enriching trips available to Oklahoma 4-Hers.
