Bull on the lam 18 months back on Banning ranchSAN JACINTO, Calif. (AP)--A Texas longhorn set free to fend himself during the Esperanza wildfire some 18 months ago has had enough of wandering the countryside. The bull's owner, Gabe Mendozain, set his cattle free as flames roared toward his Banning ranch in October 2006. Recently, Riverside County Animal Control officers were called in when the longhorn wandered down from Idyllwild and was standing in traffic in San Jacinto. Animal Control officer Lesley Huennekens says the bull got "a little wild and spookish" when she tried to get a rope on him so she backed off. When spotted a short time later near Soboba Road, animal control officers drove up alongside the longhorn with a trailer. Huennekens says the bull jumped right in, adding, "He was done being a drifter." Five U.S. Forest Service firefighters were killed while battling the Esperanza wildfire, one of the blazes that raged for days throughout Southern California. 7/7/08 Date: 7/1/08 Advertisement
