Brucellosis tests continue in Mont.; no new cases reportedBILLINGS, Mont. (AP)--Montana's state veterinarian says tests of more than 600 cattle linked to a herd that was infected with brucellosis have come up negative for the livestock disease. Veterinarian Marty Zaluski says tests have been completed on 12 herds next to or otherwise connected to the ranch of Art Burns. Burns is the Paradise Valley rancher who had a positive case of brucellosis in a single cow earlier this month. The disease causes cows to prematurely abort their young. The infection--the second in Montana in about a year--will cause the state to lose its federal brucellosis-free status. That means ranchers statewide will have to test their cattle before shipping them out of state. Zaluski says tests are pending on 18 more herds. Negative results would increase the likelihood that Burns' cow contracted the disease from wildlife, such as elk. 7/7/08 Date: 7/1/08
