Staples to address Rolling Plains Wheat Conference Aug. 6By Miles Dabovich Texas Agrilife Extension agent, agriculture, Wichita County Turbulent times, not normal, crazy, wild, interesting, are just a few of the words that have been used to describe current agriculture business. High grain prices, high cattle prices, high diesel prices and high chemical prices have got producers wondering what happens next and what can they expect in 2009. Things they can probably count on are input costs are going to be as high as they have ever been and they will have to manage their operations very efficiently and be creative at marketing. On Aug. 6, the Texas AgriLife Extension Service will be hosting the Rolling Plains Wheat Seminar at the Wichita Falls MPEC from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples will kick off the conference and speak about Changing Times in the Agriculture Industry. Dr. Robert Lemon, Extension agronomist from College Station, will be addressing the key issue of soil fertility and the economics of fertilizer. Dr. Art Katt, professor of plant breeding at Oklahoma State University, will talk about "Why We Don't Have Genetic Modified Organisms in Wheat." Dr. Todd Baughman, Extension agronomist from Vernon, will discuss wheat and disease management as well as discussing the 2008 Wheat Variety Test Results. Darrell Holoday, of Advanced Market Concepts in Manhattan, Kan., will address marketing wheat and cattle in turbulent times. Stan Beavers will wrap up the program by discussing "Grain vs. Dual Purpose vs. Grazing--What's the Economic Truth." Early registration is $15 by Aug. 1 and may be sent to the Wichita County Extension Office. Registration at the door is $20. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Two pesticide CEU's will be available. For more information, call 940-716-8610. Conducted as a multi-program between Wichita, Wilbarger, Archer and Clay counties. 7/28/08 Date: 7/24/08
