Online coffee shopBy Holly Martin Farmers and ranchers are nothing if not opinionated. Many a coffee shop and small town cafe would be out of business if they weren't. The latest hot topic around those tables has been the temporary restraining order on the Critical Feed Use provision for CRP acres. If you don't quite have enough time to get to the coffee shop, you can still get your dose of chatter at www.hpj.com. Here's a sample of what our online readers are saying: "We need to all get organized and tell the contacts listed on the injunction how we all feel." "[The farmer] has been paid not to harvest the ground and now wants his cake and eat it too. Talk about welfare! I want some free stuff from the government too." "You already get some free stuff. Americans pay a much smaller percentage of their income for food than almost any other nation on earth. Check out a grocery story in Europe or Japan before you start feeling too sorry for yourself." "Many of us have devoted acreage not only via CRP, but unpaid set aside areas for wildlife. The grazing by livestock will certainly be more 'natural' and less intrusive than the machines we will have to shred that area with later in the summer. The next time one of them wants a steak on the plate, tell them it starved to death and the wildlife that might still be there is not huntable." "Those of us with CRP contracts were informed of this decision in late May. Since that time we have made many business decisions based on the knowledge that we would be able to utilize the CRP ground for grazing this year. We have spent time and money on fencing and watering systems." "My local Natural Resources and Conservations Services man felt that this grazing would be beneficial to grass and wildlife." The comment boards are open for you too. Simply log on to www.hpj.com, and post your comments. Every story we run is available on the website and available for comment at the bottom of the page. While the comments are monitored for inappropriate content, we post them all so you can read what people are saying. Because when agricultural producers get fired up, they talk about it.
