Hay trading moderately

In Kansas, the hay trade is moderate. Demand is strong for dairy alfalfa and grinding alfalfa, moderate for alfalfa pellets, prairie hay and stock cow quality hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, July 22.

The restraining order will remain in place blocking livestock producers from haying and grazing CRP under a special USDA program. If any haying and grazing is allowed in the coming weeks it will be with tighter restrictions. With alfalfa acres and yields down, total production for the year is likely to be 20 to 25 percent, maybe as high as third less than normal. Prairie hay producers are busy swathing, baling and storing hay. The forecast is for mostly hot and dry. Yields are reported lighter than expected and quality good to excellent. Prairie hay prices are steady, some hay is moving right out of the field at a discount. If you have hay for sale or pasture to rent or need hay or grazing, use the service of the Hay and Pasture Exchange website at www.kfb.org/hayandpasture/default.htm
