Crop harvest underway

New Mexico

There were 5.4 days suitable for field work during the week ending July 20, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, July 21.

Topsoil moisture was 7 percent very short, 39 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Wind damage was 23 percent light and 8 percent moderate. Hail damage was 1 percent light. Farmers spent the week thinning, weeding and harvesting crops.

Alfalfa was mostly fair to good, with 60 percent of the third cutting complete and 1 percent of the forth cutting complete. Cotton was mostly fair to good, with 80 percent squaring and 30 percent setting bolls. Corn was mostly good, with 49 percent silked. Total sorghum was mostly poor to good, with 7 percent headed. Total winter wheat harvest is nearing completion.

Peanuts were mostly fair to good with 55 percent pegged. Chile conditions were mostly good, with 20 percent light pod set and 80 percent average pod set. Onions were 95 percent harvested. Apples were mostly fair to good. Pecans were mostly good.

Cattle conditions were mostly fair to good. Sheep conditions were mostly fair to good. Range and pasture conditions were mostly poor to good. Livestock producers have been busy moving cattle and hauling water.
