Company educates livestock producers on new Rangeland Insurance

Silveus Insurance Group, Lubbock, Texas, is rolling out an aggressive educational effort to help livestock producers understand the new pilot Pasture, Rangeland and Forage Insurance program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency.

PRF Insurance insures livestock producers primarily against drought, and it covers grazing land and perennial hayland production.

Educational efforts include media kits, a dedicated website--www.rangelandinsurance.com--and making available several rangeland experts for information on these area risk plans.

The Rangeland Insurance programs provide highly subsidized coverage for livestock producers similar to what crop farmers have enjoyed for many years. Coverage can range from 60 to 150 percent of accepted annual grazing values with deductibles ranging from 10 to 30 percent.

A producer can also elect to insure his pasture or hayland for only the times of the year that he feels he is most vulnerable to drought. The insurance indemnities give producers more options from a risk management standpoint.

The programs are now available in all or portions of Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Alabama, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, New York and Pennsylvania. Risk Management Agency has also announced the agency's intention to expand coverage into Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Virginia and North Carolina for the coming year.

It is important to know that the majority of the cost is paid by the USDA. Producers have until Nov. 30 to purchase insurance for the 2009 crop year.
