Wheat harvest reaches 95 percent completeKansas Precipitation was received across most of Kansas during the week ending July 13, predominately in the North Central and North Eastern cropping districts, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, July 14. Producers averaged 5.6 days suitable for field work. Topsoil moisture is rated at 10 percent very short, 20 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated at 8 percent very short, 18 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Primary farm activities involved cutting hay, harvesting wheat, irrigating row crops, and spraying herbicides on row crops. Wheat is 95 percent harvested, compared to 88 percent the previous year and 96 percent for the 5-year average. Corn is 46 percent silked, compared to 64 percent in 2007 and 60 percent for the 5-year average. Three percent is in dough stage, compared to 8 percent last year and 10 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Sorghum is 95 percent emerged, compared to 97 percent for both last year and the 5-year average. Sorghum condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 5 percent excellent. Soybeans are 95 percent emerged, compared to 94 percent last year and 98 percent for the 5-year average. Twenty-five percent are blooming, compared to 34 percent the previous year and 41 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean condition is rated 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 8 percent excellent. Ninety percent of cotton is squaring, compared to 93 percent for the previous year and 42 percent for the 5-year average. Cotton condition is rated 5 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Eighty-two percent of sunflowers have been planted, compared to 99 percent for 2007 and 98 percent for the 5-year average. Seventy-seven percent of sunflowers have emerged, compared to 87 percent last year and 91 percent for a 5-year average. Sunflower condition is rated 3 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Eighty-two percent of the second cutting of alfalfa has been completed, compared to 80 percent last year and 88 percent for the 5-year average. Five percent of the third cutting has been completed, compared to 6 percent the previous year and 14 percent for the 5-year average. Range and pasture conditions were rated at 7 percent very poor, 10 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. Feed grain supplies were rated 5 percent very short, 10 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Hay and forage supplies were rated 2 percent very short, 6 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus.
