West Plains regional cattle sales report

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,200 head July 15, compared to 2,156 head last week and 4,869 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers started off steady to $2 higher, but quickly moved $2 to $5 higher, and some spots were $6 higher. Once buyers got settled, quality and bunches improved, with the exception of 500- to 650-weight steers which sold mostly steady to firm with last week. The supply was moderate, with several loads of steer yearlings making their way to town. Demand was good, buyer interest was linked to better quality and uniform calves preferably weaned with shots. Also buyers continued their focus on heavier yearlings in an attempt to zero-in on the more favorable months of the fat cattle board. The supply consisted of 59% steers and 41% heifers, with nearly 66% over 600 pounds.
