Thousands to attend OSU animal science field days

Oklahoma

Thousands of participants will ride herd on fun and knowledge in equal parts July 15 to 17 at Oklahoma State University's Animal Science Sheep, Beef and Swine Field Days event.

"The field days allow the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources to provide educational opportunities about the animal agriculture industry in a fun way, a combination that has made them extremely popular," said Rusty Gosz, the division's Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service youth livestock specialist.

The July 15 OSU Sheep Field Day, July 16 OSU Beef Field Day and July 17 OSU Swine Field Day will take place at the OSU Animal Science Arena located on McElroy Road, west of Western Avenue on the university's Stillwater campus. Each event will begin at 8 a.m. and last until 4 p.m.

"Participants can register to take part in each day's judging contest on-site between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., in the morning," Gosz said. "The contests have been specifically put together as teaching tools for participants, while providing youth with the opportunity to evaluate live animals and then see carcass results."

More than 100 awards and $3,100 in scholarships will be presented to high-performing participants during the field days. Each judging contest will have seven classes, allowing adults as well as junior- and senior-division 4-H and FFA members to compete.

"It's a fun family affair for many participants," Gosz said. "A number of the adults formerly competed when they were 4-H or FFA members back in the day, with their own parents evaluating livestock right alongside them."

Participants can take advantage of OSU Meats, Horse and Dairy judging clinics beginning at 2:30 p.m., July 16, during the OSU Beef Field Day. Pre-registration is required to participate.

"We're also offering four concurrent tours beginning at 2:30 p.m. on July 16," Gosz said. "We ask those who wish to take part to pre-register no later than July 14 by contacting us at 405-744-6060. Space is limited on some of the tours."

Tours will showcase Gallagher Iba Arena and the OSU Athletic Museum, Heritage Hall; the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory that helps safeguard the state from outbreaks; Reproduction Enterprises Inc., a local animal breeding business; and the OSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The Youth for Pork 2008 Speech Contest will take place at 1 p.m., July 17, as part of the OSU Swine Field Day.

"Stillwater has a wide variety of restaurants to suit anyone's taste for lunch and dinner, all within easy driving distance," Gosz said.

Additional information about the July 15 to 17 OSU animal science field days is available by contacting Gosz or Tiffani Pruitt at 405-744-6060.
