Texas wheat production down 25 percent from last year

The 2008 Texas winter wheat crop is forecast at 105 million bushels, down 25 percent from last year, but up 213 percent from 2006, and up 3 percent from the June forecast.

According to a July 1 survey conducted by the Texas Field Office, statewide yield is expected to average 30 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from last year and unchanged from the June forecast. Harvested acreage, at 3.5 million acres, is down 8 percent from 2007, and up 3 percent from June 1.

Production on the Northern High Plains is forecast at 32.2 million bushels, down 61 percent from last year. Winter wheat production on the Low Plains is forecast at 29.9 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year. Blacklands production is estimated at 22.6 million bushels, up 102 percent from last year. Production on the Edwards Plateau is forecast at 3.6 million bushels, up 1 percent from the 2007 crop.

United States winter wheat production for 2008 is forecast at 1.86 billion bushels, up 3 percent from last month and 23 percent above 2007. Yield is expected to average 46.3 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushels from last month and 4.1 bushels from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is expected to total 40.3 million acres, up 12 percent from a year ago, and unchanged from the acreage report released on June 30, 2008.
