Selk receives Extension awardOklahoma Glenn Selk received the American Society of Animal Science Extension Award recently at the ASAS meeting that took place in Indianapolis, Ind. Selk, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service professor and animal reproduction specialist, has been active in the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science and served as chair of the Extension Committee in 1992. Selk began his Extension work in northeastern Oklahoma as an area specialist and in 1986 joined the OSU animal science faculty as Extension livestock reproduction specialist and assistant professor. He reached the rank of professor in 1995. "The Extension program of Dr. Selk has been noteworthy for its innovative use of media technology," said Steve Damron, OSU animal science department professor, teaching coordinator and diversity coordinator. "He reaches his audiences with many print documents, cattlemens meetings, radio, television and the Internet across Oklahoma and many other states." He has been at the forefront of the expansion of electronic media as a means of delivering Extension programming. With more than 1,500 radio broadcasts across Oklahoma, Kansas and surrounding states, the average estimated audience for these programs is 4,500 listeners. Selk appeared on television via Cow-Calf Corner on SUNUP and other programs more than 500 times with estimated audiences in the tens of thousands. The Cow-Calf Corner website has more than 200 topics available to download and features a video-streamed link that is updated each week to match with the written version of the topic. In addition, he has delivered numerous live presentations to more than 40,000 meeting attendees. "Dr. Selk has been a leader throughout his career," Damron said. "Many beef producers in Oklahoma and in other states throughout the country benefit from his advice and counsel concerning management of cows, bulls and calves. It is safe to say that his Extension programs have helped to contribute millions of dollars in improved efficiency to the beef industry." Selk is active in many community activities including the First United Methodist Church and supports the Stillwater Community Theater. He and his wife, Mary, have a daughter, Katy. The purpose of the award is to stimulate outstanding achievements in animal science extension. To be nominated for the ASA Extension Award a candidate must have outstanding and noteworthy contributions in animal science extension including initiation and development of programs and projects in animal production or utilizable products of the animals.
