Ratliff receives national Young Jersey Breeder AwardChristy Ratliff, Garnett, Kan., received one of six Young Jersey Breeder Awards given by the American Jersey Cattle Association in ceremonies on June 25, during the association's annual meetings in Asheville, N.C. The Young Jersey Breeder Award is presented to individuals or couples who are at least 28 years old and under the age of 40 on January 1 of the year nominated, who merit recognition for their expertise in dairy farming, breeding Jersey cattle, participation in programs of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey Inc., and leadership in Jersey and other dairy and agriculture organizations. Christy Ratliff has been described by people close to her as "hard-working, competitive and passionate." These traits have helped her develop Ratliff Jerseys, owned with her husband Ron, into a herd highly-regarded for production and show-winning type. "Christy is a strong and competitive person." said Kevin Lutz, owner of Treasure Chest Jerseys, Lincolnton, N.C. "She is forward thinking and will not hesitate to offer a suggestion or an opinion to better help a situation. She has been very active on her local boards at home in Kansas and also served on the All American committees in the past. The Jersey breed is lucky to have someone like her as a promoter in their midst." The 60-cow Ratliff herd has a 2007 AJCA lactation average of 17,582 lbs. milk, 845 lbs. fat and 641 lbs. protein; and the herd is enrolled in REAP. The herd includes 21 Excellent and 25 Very Good with an average final score of 89 percent. In her 25 years of work, Christy has bred more than 95 cows that have been appraised at 90 percent and higher. 2007 was a banner year for the Ratliff herd. Ratliff Sambo Martina, Excellent-91 percent, was the winner of the National Jersey Jug Futurity in Louisville, Ky., and also the all-breed winner of the Kingsmill II International Futurity at World Dairy Expo. Ratliff Jerseys was Premier Breeder at World Dairy Expo in 2005 and 2006, Premier Exhibitor at the World Dairy Expo in 2006, and Premier Breeder at The All American Jersey Show in 2007. She is also president of the Kansas Jersey Cattle Association, and has served on the boards of the Kansas Dairy Association and the Kansas Dairy Commission. The American Jersey Cattle Association was organized in 1868 and has provided herd production recording services since 1928. The only dairy breed organization to show continuous growth over the past decade, the AJCA is delivering service for approximately 118,000 cows on performance programs. A total of 79,535 animals were recorded in 2007, the third-best year in organization history. The organization offers a comprehensive service package through REAP (registrations, equity, appraisal, and performance testing), which also includes the state-of-the-art JerseyMate program.
