Meat goat management workshop slated for Aug. 18 in LubbockTexas Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct a meat goat management workshop from 8:30 a.m., until noon Aug. 18 at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Lubbock. The Center is located three miles north of Lubbock International Airport on east Farm-to-Market Road 1294. "Lubbock has about 2,000 head of breeding-age meat goat does, and the numbers are growing," said Robert Scott, AgriLife Extension agent in Lubbock County. "Those goats generated about $150,000 last year, which could actually be on the low side. That figure is the estimated money generated from sold offspring and cull animals. "We have a lot of small-acreage landowners who have 10 to 50 head. They are the ones we are trying to reach with this program, which targets new and veteran producers alike." The workshop's keynote speaker will be Dr. Frank Craddock, AgriLife Extension sheep and goat specialist at San Angelo. Craddock will address health, nutrition and management during the workshop's initial stage. He'll then speak on reproduction, marketing and selection while evaluating live animals. Individual registration is $15 by Aug. 11 and $20 thereafter.
