Get Intense About Wheat: Kansas Wheat Conference Aug. 5 and 6 in Hutchinson

Kansas

Today's volatile wheat market demands that farmers become intense managers, producers and marketers. Your opportunity to "Get Intense About Wheat" is at the annual Kansas Wheat Conference, Aug. 5 and 6 at the Grand Prairie Hotel and Convention Center in Hutchinson.

This third annual conference features a host of speakers and presentations designed to help wheat producers revisit their previous assumptions about wheat. The conference brings together producers and industry leaders, engaging everyone in pertinent discussion on wheat issues from new research, production practices and farm policy.

The evening banquet and program Aug. 5 will be highlighted by keynote speaker Dr. Jay Lehr, an energetic economist and futurist who will focus on the direction of the wheat industry in feeding the world. Dr. Lehr combines five decades of expertise and experience in agricultural economics, agronomy, environmental science and business administration with contagious enthusiasm for the future of the American farm and ranch. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, teacher, author and entrepreneur, backing his beliefs with hard science. He promises to lift the spirits of men and women working in every facet of agri-business today.

The Conference begins at 2 p.m. Aug. 5, with the focus on "Prices, Energy Mandates, Farm Programs and Crop Yield Comparisons," featuring speaker Dr. Abner W. Womack, a Fred V. Heinkel Professor of Agricultural Economics, senior economist and co-founder of the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri.

The Aug. 6 morning General Session topic is the future of wheat. Dusti Fritz, Kansas Wheat chief executive officer, will talk about the newest wheat research tools and tricks, with a Popular Mechanics-style perspective."

Attendees can choose from several breakout sessions, including:

--Overcoming Challenges in Wheat Disease Management. Erick De Wolf, K-State Research and Extension Plant Pathology;
