Wheat genetics chair at OSU gets boostSTILLWATER, Okla. (AP)--A $300,000 gift from two groups will be used to bolster Oklahoma State University's research chair in wheat genetics research. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission and the Oklahoma Wheat Research Foundation combined on the gift during OSU's recent push for funding for endowed chairs. OSU officials say the gift will be used to improve and release competitive new wheat varieties in Oklahoma. The gift was given before a June 30 deadline, which means that under a matching program for gifts for endowed chairs that is now on hold, the state will match the gift dollar-for-dollar. The gift first will be matched by funds from a $100 million gift given to OSU in May by billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens. That means the gift from the wheat research agencies will provide a $1.2 million benefit to the university. 7/14/08 Date: 7/10/08
