McAlester livestock sales report

The McAlester Union Livestock Market, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 1,535 head July 8, compared to 1,210 head last week and 1,800 head last year, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves were $2 to $4 lower with long range investments added to feed, fuel and fertilizer costs a major concern. Feeder cattle were $2 to $4 higher with strong demand. There was a good attendance of buyers and active trade on feeder cattle, light to moderate on soft, new-crop calves. Cattle were in medium to fleshy condition. Receipts were 37% steers, 54% heifers, 9% bulls with 42% over 600 pounds. Slaughter cows and bulls were $1 to $3 higher with aggressive trade. Good attendance of buyers. Moderate to good interest in limited numbers of bred cows and pairs. A total of 185 cows and bulls sold with 60% to packers.

Light, 24 head, 85 to 90% lean, 625 to 1000 lbs., 48.00 to 51.50; high dressing, 53.00 to 56.50; low dressing, 44.00 to 48.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 15 head, 1250 to 2100 lbs., 72.00 to 75.50; high dressing, 76.00 to 83.00; low dressing, 68.00 to 71.50.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 4 to 7 years old, 900 to 1275 lbs., 4 to 8 months bred, average quality, 790.00 to 850.00.

Pairs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 4 to 5 years old, 865 to 1075 lbs., with 130- to 300-lb. calves, low to average, 850.00 to 910.00.
