Hay trade moderate to active

In Kansas, the hay trade is moderate to active. Demand is strong for dairy alfalfa, moderate to strong for grinding alfalfa, moderate for alfalfa pellets, prairie hay and stock cow quality hay. Most of western Kansas is suffering from severe to extreme drought conditions, many livestock producers have or will be forced to liquidate their herds due to the lack of feed and grass. Eastern Kansas hay producers struggle between rains to get hay cut and baled. The brome is ready, many have alfalfa ready and the bluestem will be ready next week, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, July 8. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa is steady to firm. Movement, ground alfalfa moderate, dairy alfalfa is active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $180-$215; supreme dairy, $175-$200; premium, $170-$185; good, $135-$170. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, shipped in or edge of the field, $120-$135 a little $140, a little $145 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $140-$160, contracts to $165. For the week ending June 28, 11,777 tons of grinding alfalfa and 2,675 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Wheat hay, in large bales, $90 delivered. Good straw, in large bales, $45-$55, some $85 ground and delivered.

South central:

Dairy alfalfa steady, grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady to $5 higher. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small, medium or large squares, $185; supreme dairy, $170-$195; premium, $160-$180; good, $125-$170. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $100-$110, $100-$120 delivered. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $115-$130. For the week ending June 28, 3,733 tons of grinding alfalfa and 920 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $160-$170; 17% protein, $170-$190; Dehydrated, 15% protein, $200; 17% protein, $225. Good straw, in large bales, $55.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse and goat alfalfa, in small squares, $145-$190, in medium squares, $220. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $155-$185; premium, $145-$175; good, $130-$140. Good bluestem, in small squares, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $80-$90, in large rounds, $45-$60, mulch, in large rounds, $50. Good brome, in small squares, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $85-$100, in large rounds, $50-$60; fair, in large rounds, $35-$45.

Northwest:

Dairy and grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $200. Premium/supreme dairy, $175-$185; good, $165. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $90-$110; ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $120-$140.

North central/northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $185-$200, in medium squares, $165-$185; supreme dairy, $170-$200; premium, $140-$170. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$80, alfalfa ground on truck, $80-$100. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $90-$100, in medium squares, $75-$90, in large rounds, $45-$60. Good brome, in small squares, $100-$120, a little, $4-$4.50/bale, in medium squares, $90-$120, in large rounds, $50-$60; fair, in large rounds, $40-$50. Straw in small squares, $2.50-$3.50/bale, in large bales $50.
