Free-wheelin' family fun

By Susen Foster

Southern Oklahoma is home to spectacular outdoor recreation. And one of the most inclusive spots for family fun is Lake Murray State Park located off I-35, just shouting distance of the Texas border.

With over 12,500 acres of relative wilderness surrounding 5,700 acres of lake, it is Oklahoma's largest state park and one of its most popular family destinations.

Besides fishing, boating, and swimming, there is a marina with rentals, swimming pool, remote control air field, an airstrip, bait and tackle shop, Frisbee golf, horseback riding, hiking, biking, rollerblading, and miniature golf. There are tennis courts, softball fields, a baseball diamond, an 18-hole golf course, horseshoe pits, badminton and volleyball nets. There is the Tucker Tower Nature Center, where local artifacts are displayed, and nature programs and activities are conducted by state park naturalists.

More importantly Lake Murray is also Off Road Heaven!! There are 1,000 acres of free range ATV trails, suitable for all skill levels from novice to extreme, where you can blaze your own or follow the trails, head to the beach or venture through the brush.

When Mike Buchanan and his family discovered this immense oasis of 4-wheelin' fun, they decided the only thing missing was the opportunity for people visiting the park to be able to take advantage of it.

"Let's rent some FUN," said Mike. Wife, Susie, and grown children Randy and Serena, Chris and Kristy, and Angela all agreed and a family operation was born. "We had been ATVing together for years and we knew how an adventure like this could make a vacation into a real memory maker."

Although reservations at www.okatvrentals.com or by calling (580)222-5220 are recommended, they welcome walk-ups. In fact, many people just happen upon the place and have to give it a try.

Located right at the ATV park entrance, Thrills & Chills on Wheels makes everything so simple. With your rental of an Arctic Cat 50cc, 90cc or 250cc, you also get the free use of a helmet and goggles. The quads are full of gas and maintained regularly. You don't even have to clean it up when you get back. They do all the work and you can rent for an hour, a day, or a weekend with prices discounted accordingly. There's even a food wagon handy.

Experience all the fun of 4-wheelin' without the costs to purchase, insure and maintain. Plus, you don't have to trailer it anywhere. In fact, the Buchanans will even deliver ATVs to your location of choice. Like their slogan says "Rent the fun, leave the work."

This is one of the greatest "not so EVERYDAY" GetAways I have found and I highly recommend visiting www.okatvrentals.com for more information.
