RC&D holds annual meeting

Colorado

Southeast Colorado RC&D held their annual meeting Nov. 29 at Otero Junior College in La Junta. A diverse crowd attended, with representatives from the State Natural Resources Conservation Service Office, the regional NRCS Field Offices, area Conservation Districts, Baca Green Energy, Rural Development and others.

Ravi Malhotra, Executive Director for iCAST, explained how his International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology works with RC&D, Rural Development and others to get renewable and alternative energy projects on the ground. Some of the projects Ravi spoke of included irrigation sprinklers in the San Louis Valley that are being partially powered by Photo Voltaic Solar Electric panels, the Hugo swimming pool using Solar Thermal as a heat source, a Small Wind Feasibility Study in Baca County and the "Weatherization" projects they are doing that include retrofitting schools for greater energy efficiency, as well as green building.

Gary Anderson gave the Southeast Colorado RC&D financial report. Other speakers included Gary Ensign from Colorado League RC&D, David Howard on his Farm Scale Ethanol Plant project, Joe Kost from Rural Development and Jim Valliant, the new RC&D Council Chairman. During the program, Matt Heimerich welcomed Branson-Trinchera Conservation District as new members of the Southeast Colorado RC&D district. Outgoing Council Chairman Matt Heimerich was also honored with a certificate of appreciation, presented by NRCS Assistant State Conservationist Randy Randall.
