Several U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Salina employees will retire in January 2008.

State Conservationist Harold L. Klaege will retire after 37 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service. In 2002, Klaege became the eighth state conservationist to serve in Kansas over the last 72 years. Prior to coming to Kansas, Klaege held the position as National Watershed Program Leader in Washington, D.C. He began his career in 1970 as a student trainee while studying for his engineering degree at The Ohio State University. Most of Klaege's career was spent in Nebraska where he held several engineering and management positions. NRCS provides conservation assistance on private lands to farmers and ranchers.

State Resource Conservationist Jeff Hart will retire after 35 years of Federal service. Hart began his professional career in 1977 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service in Phillipsburg as a range conservationist. He also worked in field offices in Fort Scott, Winfield, and Osage City for the NRCS before coming to the Salina State Office in 1996. Hart served in the U.S. Army and worked for the Bureau of Land Management, too. He is a native of Barnard and a graduate of Fort Hays State University.
